NEW ART GALLERY and EXHIBITIONS at L’ARGOT
L’Argot, located in Harlem’s historic Sugar Hill district, 142 Hamilton Place, New York, NY 10031, is happy to invite you to a special exhibition of paintings by Walter Biggs, opening Tuesday 7 May, continuing through Thursday 30 May 2019.
There will be a reception for the artist from 6 to 8 PM TUESDAY 14th of May 2019. ATTENTION! This date changed!
(There will be a PROSECCO special of 5$ per glass during the reception)
Newly opened, L’Argot bar and restaurant hosts notable concert events and art exhibitions by distinguished living artists. Its program is varied and a new exhibition opens monthly.
Walter Biggs’ paintings, composed of graphite, sand, oil and acrylic allude visually, physically, and experientially to nature and landscape. A deeper perception may intuit a connection to environmental catastrophe. References, both abstract and representational, combine to make dense mysterious surfaces, which are neither organic nor wholly manufactured.
The suite of ten paintings exhibited at L’Argot were painted in 2016 and 2017. Collectively, they are a departure from Biggs’ twenty years making process oriented work with similar materials. While moving obliquely toward narrative content, the paintings are as much objects as they are graphic representations.
Walter Biggs received an MFA from School of Visual Arts, New York, in 1990. He currently lives and works in Harlem. His work has been exhibited at Momenta Art, Philadelphia, PA and Newburgh, NY; Trans-Hudson Gallery, NJ and NY; Sperone Westwater, NY; Galleria Milleventi, Milan; Galleria Cardi, Milan and Museo D’Arte della Citta de Ravenna, Ravenna, among others. Walter Biggs’ work is also included in a group show titled Earthy, a Momenta Artexhibition, presently on view through 9 June 2019 at Atlas Studios, 11 Spring Street, Newburgh, New York 12550.
